Samuel Christopher Lancaster photograph album [graphic], 1916-1918.

Copy of a photograph album originally owned by Samuel Christopher Lancaster, engineer of the Columbia River Highway. The images date from 1916-1918 and depict various features of the Columbia River Gorge, including Vista House at Crown Point and waterfalls, as well as Lancaster and the highway itself. Also includes photographs taken at the dedication ceremonies for the Columbia River Highway in June 1916 and the Rotary Fountain at Wahkeena Falls. Includes a note about the location of the original album and the circumstances under which the album was copied for the Oregon Historical Society. Photographers include George M. Weister, Benjamin A. Gifford, Arthur M. Prentiss, and Winter Photo Company.

Benjamin A. Gifford (1859-1936) was born in DuPage County, Illinois. After briefly attending Kansas Normal College, Benjamin worked for two years as an apprentice in a Ft. Scott, Kansas, photo gallery. He finished his apprenticeship in Sedalia, Missouri, under William LaTour, and then returned to Fort Scott to become a partner in a photo studio.
